Why Skate 4? EA naming, skate. vs ReSkate explained: one page clears up every naming confusion.
skate 4 reskate: ReSkate vs skate. vs Skate 4, Explained
There is no official game called "skate 4." EA's game is skate. — lowercase with a period — and fans call it Skate 4 because it is the fourth major entry after Skate, Skate 2, and Skate 3. ReSkate is something else: a third-party, open-source modding platform that runs a frozen Steam PC build of skate. offline, with mods and its own multiplayer. This page untangles all three names.

Why Everyone Calls It skate 4
EA never put the number 4 on the box. The official title is skate. — lowercase, with a trailing period — and it entered early access on September 16, 2025 as a free-to-play, online-only sandbox set in the city of San Vansterdam. But players had waited over a decade since Skate 3 (2010), so the community immediately nicknamed the new game Skate 4: the fourth entry in the series. When early modded-map footage spread in September 2026, community trackers titled the moment "Modded Skate 4 is coming." So when you search "skate 4" and land on ReSkate content, nothing is wrong — you found the right game under its fan nickname.
Search engines understand both, but official sources (Steam, EA, patch notes) always say skate. while players, YouTube titles, and mod pages usually say Skate 4. If a download page or server listing says "Skate 4," it means EA's skate. (2025), not a separate game.
skate. vs Skate 4 vs ReSkate in One Table
| skate. (official) | Skate 4 (fan nickname) | ReSkate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | EA's free-to-play game | The nickname for that same game | A third-party modding platform for that game |
| Made by | EA studio Full Circle | Nobody — it is just a name | The Dingo-Shenanigans open-source team (led by zeex64) |
| Costs | Free on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox | Same game, same price | Free and open source (GPL-3.0) |
| Runs on | PC, PlayStation, Xbox, online-only | Same as skate. | Windows PC via the Steam build only (as of v1.1.3, October 6, 2026) |
| Multiplayer | EA official servers | Same | Its own 32-player lobbies and dedicated servers, no EA servers |
| Mods | Not allowed on the live game | Same | The whole point: custom maps, cosmetics, park editor, trainer |
The short version: Skate 4 = skate. (same thing, two names), while ReSkate ≠ skate. (a separate community project that needs the game to work).

What EA skate. Actually Is
EA announced a new skate game in 2020 and set up Full Circle, a studio in Burnaby, British Columbia, staffed partly by people who made the original games. The result, skate., launched in early access on September 16, 2025: free-to-play, set in San Vansterdam, with cross-platform multiplayer — and the first skate game ever on PC.
Three properties of the live game explain why ReSkate exists:
- Online-only. The game requires a connection to EA servers, so there is no official way to skate offline on your own.
- Kernel anti-cheat. EA lists skate. among the games protected by EA Javelin Anticheat, which shuts the game down if it detects cheat tools, debuggers, or conflicting software.
- Live-service rules. EA's user agreement treats mods, hacks, and trainers that change the game in unauthorized ways as unauthorized third-party programs — which is why community trackers will not host mods that touch the live game.
So the official game is a locked, always-online live service. Everything ReSkate does is a response to that lock. If you want the install walkthrough for the PC version, follow the ReSkate download and install guide.
What ReSkate Actually Is
On October 2, 2026, the Dingo-Shenanigans team open-sourced ReSkate and shipped v1.0.0 the same day (launch coverage). It is a modding platform for skate.: a launcher, a runtime loaded into the game, and a dedicated server, all GPL-3.0. The launcher pins your Steam copy to one supported build (25414733, unchanged from v1.0.0 through v1.1.1 per the install guide, as of October 5, 2026), downloading exactly the files it needs, then runs the game offline with no EA servers. On top: a Mods folder with a built-in Thunderstore browser (216 mods and 326,000+ downloads within three days), its own 32-player lobbies and servers, a Park Editor, and a built-in Trainer. The project states it is "NOT a replacement for the live game, a way to get paid cosmetics, or a place for leaks" — and because it still runs EA's client, EA's terms still apply. Details live in the safety guide and the offline explainer.
ReSkate is a fan project by Dingo-Shenanigans, not affiliated with or endorsed by Electronic Arts or Full Circle. Likewise, this site (re-skate.wiki) is an independent fan site with no affiliation to EA, Full Circle, Dingo-Shenanigans, or Thunderstore. Never download ReSkate from mirrors — only from the official GitHub Releases page.
Why ReSkate Only Works With the Steam PC Build
New players often ask why there is no PlayStation or Xbox version. The answer is structural: ReSkate is a PC modding platform, not a game port. The launcher verifies and re-downloads a specific Steam build using your own Steam account — a mechanism with no console equivalent. You cannot freeze a console build, inject a runtime DLL, or load a Mods folder on a PlayStation or Xbox, and the console live game stays exactly as EA ships it: online-only and cheat-protected.
PC players on Linux are a partial exception worth knowing about: the launcher and runtime are Windows programs, but the community runs them under Proton, and the dedicated server has a native Linux build since v1.0.8. Consoles remain fully out of scope. For the complete breakdown, see which platforms ReSkate supports.
Mistakes New Players Make
- Downloading "Skate 4" from a random site. There is no separate Skate 4 installer. The only game download is skate. itself (free on Steam), and the only ReSkate download is the official GitHub Releases page.
- Expecting ReSkate on PS5 or Xbox. It is PC-only by design. If a video claims a console version, it is mistaken or misleading.
- Confusing ReSkate with the Skate 3 recomp project. That is a different community effort: a native PC port of the 2010 Xbox 360 game Skate 3. The Skate 3 recomp vs ReSkate comparison separates them.
- Assuming mods survive updates. Every mod targets one pinned game build. When ReSkate moves to a new build, old mods are skipped with a message — so after any update, check the version history tracker before reporting anything broken.
- Treating the project's ban FAQ as EA policy. ReSkate's FAQ says EA cannot ban you, but that is the project's statement, not EA's: as of October 7, 2026, EA has made no public statement about ReSkate. Read the trust guide for the full sourced picture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is skate 4 a real, separate game I need to buy?
No. "Skate 4" is the fan nickname for EA's skate. (2025), which is free-to-play — you only add it to your Steam library. ReSkate itself is also free and open source.
Is ReSkate made by EA?
No. ReSkate is built by the independent open-source team Dingo-Shenanigans and carries an explicit non-affiliation statement. EA's official game and the community modding platform are developed, hosted, and moderated by completely different parties.
Can I get banned for using ReSkate?
Only sourced facts here: the project's own FAQ says you cannot be banned by EA, while EA itself has made no public statement about ReSkate as of October 7, 2026. Note that the ReSkate team does operate its own multiplayer ban list. Neither this site nor the project can speak for EA, so do not treat community claims as guarantees.
Why does ReSkate need my Steam copy if it plays offline?
Because ReSkate is a mod layer, not a game: it needs EA's actual game files as its foundation, pinned to one supported Steam build. The base game is free, but you must bring your own legitimate Steam copy — ReSkate provides no game files.
I searched "skate 4" — am I even in the right place?
Yes. Most player-made content (mods, videos, servers) uses the Skate 4 nickname while official pages use skate. If your goal is mods, offline play, or private servers on PC, you want ReSkate — the install guide is your next stop.
