ReSkate multiplayer guide: 32-player lobbies, server browser, proximity voice, parties, and Throwdowns explained as of v1.1.3.
ReSkate Multiplayer: Lobbies, Voice Chat, and Throwdowns
Want to skate with friends in ReSkate? Short answer: host a Steam lobby for up to 32 players (public, invite-code, or password-protected), or pick a dedicated server from the server browser — then use proximity voice, text chat, parties, and Throwdowns to skate together. This guide walks the full join flow as of v1.1.3 (October 6, 2026).
ReSkate is a third-party open-source mod platform, not an EA product, and this site is an independent unofficial fan site with no affiliation to EA, Full Circle, Dingo-Shenanigans, or Thunderstore. New here? Start with what ReSkate actually is and the official install guide.

Lobby or Server: Pick Your Way to Play
ReSkate multiplayer comes in two flavors. Both run outside EA servers — ReSkate sessions never connect to EA.
Official source: the ReSkate repository and its Releases page, plus the community walkthrough at skatemods.com
| Option | Capacity | Best for | Who runs it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam lobby | Up to 32 players | A quick session with friends | You, from inside the game |
| Dedicated server | Up to 249 players per server (community wording) | A persistent public spot or community hub | A host running ReSkateServer headlessly |
Lobbies are instant and disposable: open one, share the code, skate, close it. Dedicated servers stay up around the clock, appear in the server browser by name, and support admin commands, votes, and map rotations. Want to run one? See the dedicated server setup guide.
If everyone is online right now, skip the server: one of you hosts a 32-player lobby, shares the code or password, and the rest join directly.
Host and Join a 32-Player Lobby
Steam lobbies are ReSkate's built-in way to play together without touching a server binary. Three access modes cover every group size and privacy need.
| Lobby mode | How it works |
|---|---|
| Public | Anyone browsing lobbies can see and join |
| Invite code | Only players with the code can join — share it privately |
| Password-protected | Joining additionally requires the password you set |
Hosting: open the ReSkate menu with Insert, head to the multiplayer section, and create a lobby with your preferred visibility. Guests join from the same menu. One rule underlies everything — Steam must be open and logged in before you press PLAY. Since v1.0.1 the launcher warns you if Steam is closed; without a login the game still starts, but you enter as "Unknown Player" with no multiplayer at all (offline mode guide).
If you play on Steam Deck or Linux, read the Steam Deck and Linux guide before hosting — lobby hosting on Proton can still report "Multiplayer is off" (open issue #19).
Use the Server Browser to Find a Game
Prefer a server that is already running? The in-game server browser lists every public dedicated server.
1. Match versions exactly. Player and server must run the same ReSkate version — a v1.1.3 client cannot play on a v1.1.2 server. Windows servers self-update when empty; Linux servers do not, so drift is more common there.
2. Find it by name. Each server start gets a fresh Steam ID and join code, so bookmark the server's name. Unlisted servers will not appear in the browser and must be joined directly.
3. Bring the same map mod. If a server runs a custom map, every player must have that exact map mod installed. A skipped map usually means your copy is outdated — see the mod install guide.
Version mismatch is the number-one reason a server "disappears" or refuses joins. ReSkate was releasing roughly a version a day in its first week, so always confirm your client tag matches the server's tag before troubleshooting anything else.
Proximity Voice and Text Chat
ReSkate voice is proximity-based: you hear skaters near you, and distant riders fade out. Admins tune it with voice_chat on/off and voice_range from 50 to 1000 meters, plus live voice, distance, and building controls in the Multiplayer menu.
Text chat covers everything voice cannot:
| Input | What it does |
|---|---|
| T | Opens multiplayer text chat |
| Chat bubbles | Messages also float above heads in-game (added in v1.1.3) |
/w <player> <text> |
Private whisper to one player |
| Emote chat with profanity filter | Servers can enable a word filter for public chat |
Server-side private messaging (msg, msg-party, msg-admins) arrived during the v1.1.2 development interval. The complete key list lives on the keys and console cheatsheet.
Parties: Keep Your Crew Together
Parties are ReSkate's way of keeping a fixed crew together inside a busy lobby or server — members stick together, share a private channel, and arrive as a group. Lobbies gained party support in v1.0.9; servers enable parties by default.

| Party fact | Details (as of v1.1.3) |
|---|---|
| Size | 2–8 members, default 8 (party_size) |
| Invite | Social menu, player business card, Multiplayer menu, or /party invite |
| Party chat | /p talks to party members only |
| Toggle | Servers can disable parties with parties off |
The pattern that works: form the party first, then have the party leader join the lobby or server — everyone arrives together and /p keeps tactics off the public channel.
Throwdowns: Jam, Spot Battle, and S.K.A.T.E.
Throwdowns are ReSkate's organized contest formats. Three are confirmed by the launch announcement: Jam, Spot Battle, and S.K.A.T.E. Servers announce them with the announce-throwdowns toggle, and players vote on maps, kicks, and time-of-day with /vote map, /vote kick, /vote tod, answered /yes or /no.
An honesty note this site takes seriously: the detailed rules of each format — scoring, brackets, turn order — are not documented in any public source we could verify as of v1.1.3. What is confirmed is that the three formats exist, that servers can announce them, and that lobbies and most servers have enforced the ReSkate team's global ban list since v1.1.1. Learn each format's house rules from the lobby host before competing; we will document the actual rules here once a verified source describes them.
Before You Roll Online: Quick Checklist
Run this checklist once and nearly every "multiplayer is broken" report resolves itself.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Unknown Player", no lobbies or servers | Steam closed or not logged in | Open Steam, log in, relaunch — the launcher has warned about this since v1.0.1 |
| Server visible yesterday, gone today | Client/server version mismatch | Update to the newest tag; both ends must match exactly |
| Join fails on a custom-map server | Missing or outdated map mod | Install the same map mod from Thunderstore; check the launcher for skipped-mod notices |
| Nobody can hear anyone | Voice disabled or everyone out of range | Ask an admin to check voice_chat and voice_range; roll closer together |
| Hosting on Deck/Linux says multiplayer is off | Known Proton hosting issue (#19, still open) | Join instead of hosting, or see the Deck and Linux guide |
For ban-risk questions, the record is short: as of October 7, 2026, EA has made no public statement, and ReSkate sessions never touch EA servers. That is not a promise — see the safety and ban guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many players can play together in ReSkate? Steam lobbies hold up to 32 players each. Dedicated servers hold far more — up to 249 players per server according to community wording — which makes them the right home for public communities rather than friend groups.
Do I need to open ports to play? No. Player traffic goes over the Steam relay, so joining needs zero network setup. Forwarding UDP 27015–27016 only improves the browser ping display and join speed.
Can I turn voice chat off?
Yes. Admins can switch voice_chat off, shrink voice_range to 50 meters, and enable the profanity filter. Distance alone also quiets things — proximity voice fades with range.
What are the rules for Jam, Spot Battle, and S.K.A.T.E.? Not publicly documented as of v1.1.3. The three format names and the server announcement toggle are confirmed; scoring and bracket details are not. Ask your lobby host for house rules until a verified source publishes them.
Will playing online get my account banned? As of October 7, 2026, EA has made no public statement, and ReSkate sessions never touch EA servers. Nobody can promise what EA will do — read the full safety and ban guide before you decide.
Do I need the same mods as everyone else? For custom-map servers, yes — every player needs the same map mod. Otherwise the launcher skips incompatible mods by name, so keep your mods updated.
